In the vicinity of downtown hospitals, there is a group of parents in need of special care. Their children suffer from malignant tumor, also known to people as fearsome cancer. They have to travel a long way to Shanghai or other big cities with better medical resources for treatment. During the period, families have to endure persistent mental stress and confront difficulties including high rents, children’s dropping out of school and losing companion, parents’ losing jobs, tense family relationships, long-term radiotherapy and chemotherapy as well as seeking medical consultation and help.
Many parents have to stay overnight in hospital corridors or sleep on hospital lobby seats, for the sanitation conditions of the apartments they might afford are worrying and not good for the treatment and recovery of tumor.
According to related data references, the second fatal threat to children’s lives in China is malignant tumor (the first threat is accidental injury), with about 40,000 new cases increased per year. Children’s malignant tumor includes Leukemia, lymphadenoma and solid tumor. Although their five-year survival rate reaches around 72%, the treatment period is long (on average 1 year to 3 years or even longer) and the medical expenses are high (normally over RMB100,000). Some families have to face the sorrow of losing beloved ones or their only child.
For caring cancer children and their families, a group of volunteers are in action to build up “Ark Caring Home” (Little Home for short) with hope and love. The Little Home provides accommodation and caring service. Our plan is to open 3 homes with 13 rooms in Shanghai, East China and a caring center with 50 beds in Luzhou City, Southwest China. Meanwhile, caring activities such as "Ravens’ Breads", "Sick children Classes”, “Little Home Dreams’ Wall”, "Parents’ Classroom", "Ark Part-time Jobs" and "Ark Loving Landlord" are carried out to invigorate the families in hardship.
1. Worry of Hanhan & her family. Hanhan, with Medulloblastoma, a brain tumor, is only 6 years old. Since her parents have just given birth to a baby boy in their hometown in Anhui province, her grandparents have to take her to Shanghai for treatment. They are farmers and the high medical expenses are borrowed from relatives and friends. After surgery, Hanhan needs radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Therefore, the family has to rent an apartment close to the hospital with housing cost reaching RMB3,000 to RMB4,000 per month. After introduction from a volunteer, Hanhan’s family applied to stay in “Ark Caring Home”. The little home is spacious, comfortable, sanitary and tidy. Grandpa and Grandma are grateful as the living condition is even better than their own home. The good accommodation conditions benefit the children’s further treatment and recovery. Many people with love still send them daily necessities such as rice, cooking oil, washing liquid and detergent, which largely relieves their worry. At this moment, Hanhan knows she is not alone when fighting with cancer.

2. Distress of Xiao Xin’s Mother. Fourth grade pupils should be playing happily on the sports ground, learning knowledge and being pampered by parents. However, those normal things are luxuries to Xiao Xin who loves reciting and singing, playing and studying. On the threshold of her beautiful life, she was diagnosed Brainstem Glioma this March. Having had various body examinations, it was found that she was not able to have surgery but only long-term treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Xiao Xin has to bear the pain of treatment in body while her mother has to suffer the torture in heart. After they applied to stay in “Ark Caring Home”, many Shanghainese mothers with love come to visit them, comfort them and take part in “Sick Children Classes” and “Parents’ Classroom” together with them frequently. Life is not easy but hope is the way. “Ark Caring Home” is the Haven to accommodate the suffering families. Hand in hand, let’s walk together!
